Why are "dark" things associated with sadness, angry or evil?
I'm 17. Since I was a little kid, I've loved "darker" things. It wasn't until my teenage years that I began to dress accordingly (naturally hahaha).
I like everything from the cartoonish "Halloween/horror-type", to the realistic, historical Gothic images. These symbols make me happy, and I'm just completely enthralled by them, yet a lot of people think I'm sad or "Emo" (that one always gets me laughing!). Luckily my parents aren't bothered in the least, because they know it's a genuine and innocent interest, not some sort of fad.
Anyway, to get to the point, why are these things regarded as "Sad, angry or evil"?
My intial thought was religion, but then I thought about the gray European Cathedrals, COVERED in gargoyles and paintings, along with the preists and nuns dressed in all black. If anything, religion contributes in a way. hahaha
EDIT: Wow, I just realized I butchered the wording on that question! You get the idea, right? ^,..,^
Black stand for many things, Dark is not real, it is the lack of light. Dark is closely associated with evil, sad, bad, angry due to few positive images. Priests and nuns wear black as a symbol of dying to them selves and serving God. It may come out of religion and culture, in old westerns good guys wore white/light colors and bad guys work black or dark colors. God is seen as light, good, light of Christ, etc. Darkness is seen as a lack of God. While, black does stand for power, power is a neutral state and dark is assorted with death, evil, and negative emotions. Black is worn to funerals for this reason. So, that is why some people worry about "emos" or "goths" Black is rarely used as a happy color.
