How do you train a horse to keep his head down?
I was just wondering--especially how the horse distinguishes between this and something like stopping or slowing down. Do you need a specific bit? And how do you train a horse to keep his head up and down like in english, or long and down like in western pleasure?
Well for dressage teaching a horse to keep his head down comes from teaching him to be forward. You see when a horse is properly engaging their hind end and has their hind quarters beneath them, the front end will naturally lift slightly, and the entire spine, not just the neck, will round upwards. This causes the head to drop with the poll still remaining the highest point on the horse's body. Teaching a horse to properly carry himself with his "head down" can only be taught through teaching him forward impulsion, getting his hind end beneath him, and powering through with the hind quarters.
Tie downs and other devices can teach the horse to keep his head down, but if the back is hollowed out... all you're doing is getting an arched neck, you're not achieving roundness, which is what you really want.
