Why do people put their hands on their head when something bad happens?
Example: Someone witnesses a horrible accident and they put their hands behind their head.
It might be because uttering stuff like "Ow my Gord!" could be construed as taking the Lord's name in vain, and so, upon belatedly realising this, they instinctively put their hands on their heads to ward off the expected mighty thunderbolt from heaven, or perhaps to protect their vulnerable grey matter from a pretty severe cranium-whacking by God's almighty hand (or the hand of one of his appointed agents).
