Different 3D Printing Materials Explained
3D printing materials play an important role in the quality, build, and final look of the 3D model created by a 3D printer. If wrong 3D printing material is selected to build a prototype, there are more chances of the 3D model looking a bit different from the three dimensional diagram used as a reference.
The reason behind this is the elasticity, physical and chemical characteristics, and transparency of each 3D printing material being different from the other. There are more than 60 different types of 3D printing materials that can be used to build a prototype. Let's take a closer look at some of the main materials used for 3D printing purposes.
3D Printing Materials Designed to Simulate Known Materials
- ABS -Like:
This type of printing material is specially designed to simulate the behavior of ABS-grade engineered plastics. These materials have high temperature resistance, along with high grade toughness and quality. They are suitable to build parts that need to have shock-absorption and high impact resistance qualities such as engine covers and parts and functional prototypes.
- Polypropylene-Like:
These materials are specially designed to simulate the behavior of Polypropylene. These materials are ideal for a wider range of applications where the 3D models need to have strength, flexibility, toughness and the appearance of Polypropylene. Polypropylene-like material is mainly used to produce models or prototypes of reusable containers, battery cases, toys, automotive components, loudspeakers, and laboratory equipment.
- Rubber-Like:
There are different types of rubber like 3D printing material. The difference between the rubber-like materials is their various levels of elasticity. These 3D printing materials, though similar in nature, have different hardness, tear resistance, tensile strength, and elongation at break properties. These rubbers like printing material are ideal for wide range of applications that require soft surfaces with non-slip characteristics. These materials are used in 3D printing for producing models of medical devices, consumer electronics, and automotive interiors.
Other Types of 3D Printing Materials
- Transparent:
The transparent 3D printing material is designed to simulate standard plastics that have characteristics such as biocompatibility, great dimensional stability, and surface smoothness. These printing materials are ideal for making lighting covers, glass, eye-wear, artistic and exhibition modeling, and medical applications.
- Rigid Opaque:
There are different types of rigid opaque printing materials used in 3D printing devices. The general characteristic of this material is high detailed visualization with great dimensional stability. The models created with rigid opaque materials have the highest resemblance in terms of the look of the final product. These materials are ideal for building prototypes of assembled parts and moving parts, marketing models, assembly of electronic components, and exhibition and sales models.
- Dental Wax-up Material:
The dental wax-up printing material is a special formulation used to produce dental prosthesis "wax-ups". They are ideal to produce superior quality, smooth surface crowns, restorations, copings, and other different dental prosthesis. Dental prosthesis manufactured with this printing material ensures a proper fit every time.
The 3D printing materials used in 3D printers are available in sealed cartridges. The cartridges are available in different weight ranges such as 1kg, 2kg, and 3.6kg. The specification of a printing cartridge changes with every cartridge manufacturer. The 3D printing materials cartridges can be easily fitted, changed, and replaced in 3D printers.
