Make a list of the places you want to go and then look at the map to plan out your day so you won't be crisscrossing the city wasting time.
Columbus Circle, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, St Patricks Cathedral, Grand Central Station, Broadway and Times Square are all within walking distance of each other. You could start at Columbus Circle in the morning and end in Times Square after a Broadway play.
The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, World Trade Center site and St Paul's Chapel (where George Washington went to church) can be seen the next day.
China Town, Little Italy and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (with a stop at the end of the bridge in Brooklyn for pizza at Grimaldi's) can be done another day.
I recommend Frommer's Guide to NYC which you can get at any book store. Look through it to decide what you must see in the time you have. NYC can't be seen in 1 trip so pick the places most important to you. You're going to have sooooo much fun.
