How to make a plaster mold of your arm?
I am wondering how to make a plaster mold of your arm that you can make silicone or foam castings with. Thanks in advance!
How much of the arm? All of it? Biceps to wrist? Hand/fingers?
Obviously you need assistance and a well supported position to support the arm in the pose.
The method used for inanimate objects (pushing it half way into a container of plaster) is not going to work safely for the arm unless very carefully done because too much plaster gets very hot while setting.
The best way would be to use plaster bandage like is/was used for casts but while that allows going full round and is self supporting, cutting it off requires a special vibrating saw blade to keep from cutting skin.
Alternately, I think I would create a plastic covered curved surface to fit the arm - this might be done with sand on plastic sheet on a table or arranged rolled towels, either one covered with plastic and adjusted to the pose shape of the arm. Then soak some cloth in plaster (or unroll soaked plaster bandage) and lay it in the shape to half way up the sides of the arm and add just enough plaster to the length to make a 1/2 or so layer and push the vaseline coated arm into it. Spoon more plaster and push around the stuff so the gaps along the arm are filled and smooth along the top edge while it is setting. Wait. If it gets too hot, pull the arm out.
When the lower half has pretty much set, remove the arm carefully and let it set some more and dry. Coat the edges of the half mold with vaseline or spray fat or English soap and do the upper half. This time the first layer applied has to be plaster detail coat, not to thick, and then that backed with plaster bandage. When this is firm and cooling to touch, carefully work it off and remove arm and let all set.
Plaster-Mold Casting
