How much does a Portuguese water dog cost?
Like the one Obama's getting?
I'm definitely not planning on getting one - I'm just curious as to what they cost, because I overheard that they are expensive!
Most quality breeders will want between $1500 and $2000 for a PWD. For this money you will expect that the breeder has had numerous tests done for genetic problems and has started socializing the dog to a variety of environments and experiences. Though expensive on the front end, a well bred puppy can save you thousands over the lifetime of the dog by minimizing the risk that the dog will need treatment for anxiety, bad hips, bad eyes, seizures, allergies, etc.
A quality breeder does their part to prevent unwanted dogs by requiring that you return the dog to them if you can not keep it for any reason.
I don't want to imply that I don't support getting rescue or pound dogs. Just that there is a reason why quality breeders ask so much more than puppy mills or backyard breeders.
