Is oxygen absolutely required to start a fire?
(kinda stupid i know)
So if you were to say put jet fuel in a vacuum, heat it up with some apparatus (other than fire, maybe a laser or something) it will not burn correct?
If you define combustion as self sustaining reaction with oxygen, then yes. If you define it as a self sustaining reaction of any kind, no. Some materials react with N2 or other elements and give off as much or more heat than reacting with O2. By the way, if you put jet fuel in a vacuum, it will evaporate to a gas. It will not "burn" unless there is oxygen for it to react with.
