Dog Irish
Are Irish Setters good to have as a dog?

or any other type of Setter,English or Gordon Setter?
so not a dog for a bachlor to leave at home while you go to work.

You can have a job and still have a Setter. I have an English Setter (13 months old). While Setters are VERY active dogs outdoors, they tend to be couch potatoes inside. My dog will run all day outside, play and roughhouse with the other dogs, and walk us until we can't walk anymore, but as soon as we come in the house, he's up on the couch and right to sleep. They don't need constant activity, just make sure they get the physical and mental exertion that they need sometime throughout the day.

Plan on having a fenced yard (at LEAST 5 feet tall) before considering one, though. They all seem to need it.

If you're really thinking of a Setter, find a great breeder who'll be there for you, or a rescue...these places can answer questions for you as the dog grows up...Setters are very emotionally sensitive, and require firm but always positive training...no yelling, no hitting, no negativity at all really. If you train them harshly, they give up trying. That said, I find them HIGHLY trainable, and very loving and lovable. They are really rather humorous dogs, and sometimes I swear they TRY to make you laugh! They love to cuddle, and they love to work. If you like hunting upland birds, you'll have no greater hunting partner. If you have specific questions about the dogs, feel free to e-mail me, I'll help if I can, or try to direct you to someone who can.
