What type of varnish I need to use on top of oil based stain?
We have sanded the original floor boards and by mistake ended up applying 2 coats of oil based pine coloured stain.
I am desperate to block that orangey pine colour. What's the best way? A darker coloured varnish? If yes, does it have to be oil based varnish or can it be water based varnish?
I would try to remove as much of the stain as I could using lacquer thinner or paint thinner. I would then experiment in an inconspicuous place with either a darker stain for a polyurethane stain and especially for floors and oil-based is better. It is harder and longer lasting.
