About CSU Long Beach's Nursing program?
I really want to transfer to CSULB's nursing program, but I have a low GPA (about 3.39) and my advisor told me, for their nursing major it at least require 3.5 GPA because its very competitive (she also tole me many people apply with nearly 4.0 GPA). I calculated, before i apply to transfer, i can only raise my GPA up to 3.55 (with 21 units of A's) which is barely above the border.. I really want to get into their program! I will start doing some volunteering intership at hospitals and try to accumulate the hours, does it help much when they review my profile? Are there any other things i can do to make up my low GPA? What do they look for when they decide whether to admit u to the nursing program?
When I applied to nursing school they looked at GPA in two ways: 1) overall GPA in all subjects, and 2) GPA in the core science classes. However, they can only judge you on what they have in front of them.
Most likely, as part of the application packet, you will also have to write an essay explaining why you want to go into nursing etc. You can also address other areas in the essay. If I were you I would explain why my GPA looks low, and what I am doing about it to bring it up. I would also say that though grades are important passion and drive are too, and that you excell in those areas.
Give them a really well written essay with a logical reason your GPA was low (i.e. youth and immaturity, hardship, whatever), and that now that you know what you want and/or your life situation has changed, you will be doing better from here on out.
You are wise to look for some experience. That can imporve your chances of getting in by making you look serious about the fienld.
Get great letters of recommendation, if possible from the teachers in the classes that you are still taking which will show that your grades are coming up, especially if the subjects are related to science (nursing).
Doesn't CSULB also use the TEAS test as a way to measure the academic potential of nursing candidates, and as a major screening tool? If so, buy the book for it and start studying. You can take that test a few times (I believe), so plan ahead on how to get a high score on that.
Apply anyway, apply everywhere, you never know where your best opportunity will come up.
